Ideas For Family Home Evening Activities
In this day and age when it is busier than ever and hard to find any free time, family home evening activities are also more important and more valuable than ever. Unfortunately many people do not realize that even though parents are busy with work and children are busy with school, clubs, sports and friends, it is the family that is at the core of everyones very being. Although it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep everyone bonded, making a deep time commitment in order to stay connected can decide the paths that children will take that will lead them through their entire lives.
So what can you do for family home evening activities when everyone is so busy every day? The very first step you need to take (or the rest will be null and void) is to schedule a night physically on the calendar and text, email or tell your children and spouse that under no circumstances are they to miss it. Now be reasonable though do not schedule it at a time when you know your daughter has ballet or your son has football. If your kids always go out Friday nights, leave Friday nights alone.
Once you have the time, the question for family home evening activities is What should you do? Since this precious time is limited, every minute has to be about love, togetherness and celebrating the family. No doubt that the activities will change as the children get older, but remember it is never too late to start a tradition of family home evening activities! Play dolls or action figures one night. Play a game the next week. If you have older children who love video games, have a night where all of you play video games together. It is important that you remember the main focus here it is not so much about playing, it is about paving the way for a strong and trusting relationship by playing together.
What you do as a family home evening activity is not as important as the fact that you are doing something. Take an evening walk together, eat dinner together and go around the table with each member sharing their best and worst parts of their day or their week. Watch a movie. Put a family journal, archive or a scrapbook together with each other, adding things every week that happened that should be remembered. Another idea is to cook dinner together, do some chores together or bake a delicious dessert to enjoy for your family home evening activities.
